How PetDesk works day to day
PetDesk, also searched as Pet Desk, is veterinary client engagement software that connects your PIMS to the way pet parents want to communicate: a free mobile app, two-way texting, automated reminders, 24/7 online booking, a PIMS-integrated phone system and an AI scribe. Founded in 2013, it is one of the largest platforms in the category; the company says more than 12,000 veterinary practices use it, reaching more than 18.5 million pets and 44 million appointments a year. It is built only for veterinary practices rather than adapted from general healthcare solutions, which shows in details such as pet information and history on incoming phone calls and reminders tied to health services and preventive care.
The core is PetDesk Communications. It automates health service and appointment reminders by app, text, email and postcard, so clients who never download the app are still reached, and adds two-way texting, mass messages, digital forms, prescription refill requests and a Loyalty program that rewards clients for booking and completing visits. The PetDesk app is free for pet parents, who use it to request or book appointments, see reminders and, in many clinics, view records. The base reminders and communication package is required before you can add two-way messaging, forms or Loyalty.
What changes day to day is the phone. Instead of the front desk team calling every client to confirm tomorrow's appointments, reminders and confirmations go out automatically, clients text the clinic instead of calling, and less time is spent on hold for everyone. When a client does call, the team already has the pet's information and history on screen, so calls are shorter and more personal. PetDesk says practices reduce calls by about half and free up the equivalent of a day a week for the clinic team, time that goes back into patient care and the clients standing at the counter. Practice managers also get a complete view of client communication in one place instead of spread across a phone log, a reminder system and a separate texting tool.
Direct Booking lets pet parents book 24/7 from your website, the PetDesk app or a Book Online button on your Google Business Profile, with customizable booking rules, automated reminders and appointment deposits to reduce no-shows. PetDesk says Direct Booking cuts call volume by about half and that around 45 percent of bookings arrive when the clinic is closed; those are vendor figures, but they match what practices report about after-hours demand.
PetDesk Phones is a veterinary-specific VoIP system that integrates with more than 25 PIMS, so the front desk sees who is calling and the pet's history, upcoming appointments and reminders before picking up. It includes caller ID, voicemail with transcription, extensions, call queues, recording, conference calls, smart routing, click-to-call, missed call text back and AI call summaries, and PetDesk supplies the Yealink desk phones itself without charging extra for multiple IVRs, softphones or per-minute usage. Phones is only available to PetDesk Communications customers.
PetDesk Scribe adds AI-transcribed SOAP notes and pulls the day's schedule straight from Avimark, Cornerstone, ImproMed, ezyVet or Covetrus Pulse, so the veterinarian taps an appointment and talks instead of creating it by hand. A marketing agency service covers social media, SEO, graphic design and Google ads for practices that want growth handled for them, so a single company handles client engagement from the first search to the follow-up after care.
PIMS coverage is the strongest in the category. PetDesk Communications syncs with 123Pet, Avimark, Advantage and Avimark SQL, ClienTrax, Complete Clinic, Cornerstone and Cornerstone Cloud, Covetrus Pulse, DaySmart Vet, DVM Manager, DVMax, ezyVet, Hippo Manager, HVMS, ImproMed Infinity and Triple Crown, Instinct, Intravet, IDEXX Neo, Provet, Rhapsody, Shepherd, Stringsoft, Vetspire, V-Tech Platinum and Via, although some products are still marked coming soon on certain systems, so check booking, phones and scribe support for yours.
PetDesk pricing is not published; packages are quoted by sales based on the products you choose, and Capterra lists a starting price of $249 a month. There are no long-term contracts: PetDesk runs month to month and asks for 30 days notice to cancel, effective 30 days from your next invoice date. Onboarding includes a tailored implementation, individual training plans and live chat and phone support.
PetDesk reviews are strong. It holds 4.6 out of 5 from 183 reviews on Capterra, with ease of use and customer service at 4.7, value for money at 4.6 and features at 4.5, and 96 percent positive sentiment; VetSoftwareHub shows 4.7 from 193 reviews. Practices praise automatic reminders, online requests, two-way texting and how much time the front desk saves. The criticisms are price, with some reviewers calling it expensive and hard to cancel, slower support after implementation, automatic confirmation and reminder issues when ownership changes, and text history that syncs awkwardly into some PIMS.
If PetDesk is not the right fit, the closest PetDesk alternatives are Weave for phones, texting and reviews, Otto for scheduling, communication and payments, AllyDVM and VitusVet for reminders and client apps, IDEXX Vello for Cornerstone, Neo and ezyVet clinics, and Mango Voice if you mainly need a phone system with an AI receptionist. The verdict: PetDesk is the most complete veterinary client communication platform, with the widest PIMS support and a free app clients actually use, and the best choice for a general practice that wants reminders, booking, phone and engagement solutions from one vet-only company, giving the clinic team more time for patient care every week.

PetDeskHow to test PetDesk before you commit
Every tool demos well. These are the checks that actually tell you whether PetDesk fits your practice, while the free trial is still running.
Run a real appointment end to end
- Use your own templates and one of your busiest appointment or session types
- Test it on the devices your staff actually use, not a demo laptop
- Move the result into the system you already use and time every step
- Add a second user and watch how the per-seat price moves
Watch for the catch
- Usage caps, credits or add-on fees that only show up on the invoice
- Features quietly locked to a higher tier than the one you tried
- Onboarding or data import sold as a paid add-on
- How hard it is to export your data if you decide to leave
